In the 1960’s there were little or no resources available to families who had children with developmental disabilities to help them to better understand the needs of their children. In 1967, a group of concerned parents and local business leaders came together to address that lack of resources. Together they formed an organization known as Blue Cap.
The name Blue Cap came from combining the names of the three local communities that would receive services from that organization: Blue Island, Calumet Park, and Alsip (southwest suburbs of Chicago). Blue Cap responded to the needs of these families by providing a school program that served 28 students with developmental disabilities.
Today, Blue Cap offers a variety of programs that provide educational, vocational, therapeutic, and residential services to more than 400 infants, children, adults, and seniors with developmental disabilities. Blue Cap now serves the south side of Chicago and more than 30 suburban communities.
